Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

CBT for body dysmorphic disorder

Body dysmorphic disorder is a distressing preoccupation with a minor or non-existent defect which can have a debilitating effect on the sufferer's life and can lead to social isolation. BDD affects both men and women, manifesting itself in differing ways. Whilst men appear to be more worried about genitals, build, and thinning hair, women seem more concerned about skin, stomach and breasts. It is believed that up to 20% of people presenting at dermalogical or cosmetic surgery clinics suffer from BDD. CBT has been developed as the treatment of choice for overcoming BDD.
